  1. Get the timing right – avoid asking for things in passing instead find the right opportunity.
  2. Understand that people are not mind readers, so tell people what you need.
  3. Approach from a positive angle, not a complaining point of view.
  4. Be clear on what you want so you minimise the chances of a no or a half-hearted yes.
  5. Be confident in yourself and what you’re asking for – avoid being a martyr about your own needs.
  6. Be specific in your requests for what, when and how you would like something.
  7. Do your research so you’re armed with knowledge.
  8. Adopt an attitude of gratitude and avoid sulking. It it’s a no – don’t take it personally.
